Like to share my 16mm anamorphic set…

Like to share my 16mm anamorphic set up because to many people is is not clear how these lenses are attached. This is a set up with a Sankor 16C anamorphic.

I also tried the Sankor together with a Canon FD 50mm 1.4. Then it is slightly vignetting. Together with the Voigtländer 25mm in crop mode is working well but not as wide as with the Helios 58mm. So here’s the list:

#Lightcraft fader ND (Very useful when shooting outside)

#Redstan front filter clamp (Front Sankor has no thread, thats why you need this for attaching diopters or ND)

#The Sankor 16C (16mm anamorphic projection lens)

#Redstan anamorphic lens clamp (I have been told these are one of the best)

#Helios M42 58mm (very cheap vintage russian lens, check eBay)

#Adapter M42 to Micro 4/3 (I bought one that does not push aperture pin of Helios, when not pushed you cannot control aperture and lens is fully open all the time, so try to buy an adapter pushed this pin!)

#Piece of pencil eraser is used to keep the aperture pin of the Helios, inside the mount, in. (this solves the aperture pin problem)

#GH2

Shot at the west coast of Holland. Maasvlakte. Creating future land.

Created to test the big 35mm ISCO Gottingen Anamorphotic Kiptar 2x. It seems to be a rare lens. Have not found any footage shot with this lens. If you did, let me know.

I did not have the right clamps yet to attach it to my Canon FD 50mm so in several shots you can see it’s not in the exact right position. But when it is, the lens is razor sharp, all the way to the edges!

Recently I have become interested i…

Recently I have become interested in anamorphic lenses. The anamorphic lens captures the image looking as if it had been stretched vertically. This distortion is then reversed in edit or with projection, resulting in a wider aspect ratio on-screen than that of the frame as recorded on film or digital media. So recording stretched, then de-stretch to get all that image info into the de-stretched image… Following me?
Classic movies like Jaws, Pulp Fiction, Alien or Startrek are recorded with anamorphics.
Today these lenses and this technique can also be used with Digital camera’s like the Canon Mark 5D, or the Panasonic GH2. There are many, many different lenses. Some are rubbish, some are excellent. The squeeze factor is different depending on the type of anamorphic. The purpose of this all is to get a nice widescreen image with shallow depth of field, nice horizontal flare, stretched bokeh and a classic film look.

Andrew from EOSHD wrote a ‘book’ about anamorphics with lots of useful information. You can find it here: http://www.eoshd.com/anamorphic-guide

Till now I managed to get 2 lenses. One originally for 35mm The ISCO Gottingen Anamorphotic Kiptar 2x and one for 16mm, the Sankor 16C. These lenses have to be positioned in front of your ‘normal’ lens. You will need clamps and other stuff to get those anamorphics at the right position on front of your taking lens. Not an easy job. Still working on right clamps and ways to attach the anamorphics the proper way.

I will keep you updated about my experiences!

My first tutorial ever with screen recording. If you work with both Final Cut and After effects this is a very useful tip.
The Popcorn Island Final Cut 2 After Effects Script is a simple way to move sequences from Final Cut into a Composition in After Effects with each shot in a separate layer in After Effects. Not only does it allow you to work faster, it also saves storage space.

Guess there are other options out there like Automatic Duck, but this one is free and works like a charm.

Ross Gerbasi, the guy who created this script is working an a new version which allows working with proxy files. And some workflow optimization for working with RED footage.

Download the script over here:

There has always been a gap in the len…

There has always been a gap in the lens range for the GH2, a quality fast and wide angle lens for Micro Four Thirds was missing. There are some options around in the market, modified c-mounts, some work great, some not, but bokeh is often awful, and there is a lot of distortion. Another option would be the olympus 12mm. But it’s around € 700,-

SLR magic are working on a Noktor Hyperprime 12mm F1.6! And I am lucky to be able to test one. It’s still a prototype. There are working on final touches as we speak.

Some of you may now SLR magic, they have created fun toylenses and earlier this year I tested a prototype macro extension tube.

Some of you may know the name Noktor as well. Obviously the old Noktor company went out of business. SLR Magic will now design Noktor lenses and sell Noktor products under the SLR Magic brand.

I am lucky to have protype Noktor Hyperprime 12mm F1.6! I just received it.

On picture above you can see the hyperprime on the GH2 together with a step up ring (58-72mm) and a lightcraft 72mm fader ND (it’s needs to be that big otherwise it will vignette). You also see the Voigtländer 25mm

My first impressions of the lens are great. It feels robust and solid. Focus and aperture ring move as smooth as butter. 12mm looks like a nice wide angle view (like 24mm on 5D Mark II) and you can get nice shallow depth of field. I bett that this will be an awesome lens, especially outside, when stopped down with ND. Lens has 12 aperture blades so nice round bokeh. I also noticed some very tiny movement in between mount and lens, not sure why, maybe because it’s a prototype it’s not completely finished yet. I will ask SLR Magic about this.

In EU and US the lens will be SLR Magic HyperPrime 12mm F1.6 with a SLR Magic black ring. (around End November or December 1011)

In other parts of the world it will be the Noktor HyperPrime 12mm F1.6 with the Noktor green ring (available in October 2011)

You can contact Noktor about questions about this lens. http://www.noktor.com/contact.php

Check out some other video’s with the same lens by Seb Farges and Andrew Reid who tested this lens as well.

Recently bought a GoPro. GoPro’s HD HERO is the world’s highest performance wearable 1080p HD video and still photo camera. Professional quality 1080p HD resolutions record at 25 and 50 frames per second (50 fps in 720p)

Every week I am playing a game of squash with my brother. Just for fun. This time I brought my GoPro to see if it would work if I attach it to my racket.

This week my new timer remote arrive…

This week my new timer remote arrived. It’s the Pixel Timer Remote Control TC-252. It’s a cheap device from eBay for just €43,90 Did not have time to check all features yet but I did create a simple set up just shooting the view from my office window. I set the remote to take the maximum of 99 stills. I guess this nr. 99 means it shoots till battery is dead or card is full because I stopped the remote after about 200 stills.

First I thought this remote did not work at all. But, it’s really annoying, you have to push in the tiny plug with FULL power, or even cut away the part of the plug that prevents it from going in all the way. Only then it’s connected the right way. Had the same problem with the RodeMicPro on the Panasonic GH2 in the past as well.

I took a shot every 4 seconds, then heavily photoshopped it, then created an action and batch to give the whole sequence this Corbijnesque feel.

Will do more timelapse shots soon, it’s worth a short film!

Music – Customs (intro from Rex)
